Mill Hill Music Club
The Mill Hill Music Club was founded in 1955 by Mr Wilfred Ransom who at that time was deputy manager of Barclays Bank in Swiss Cottage. He had interviewed a Russian concert pianist who couldn’t quite manage to clear his overdraft and Wilfred, being a member of Toc H, staged a recital in the old Baptist Church Hall in Goodwin Avenue, Mill Hill, and the pianist paid off his overdraft. Since 1955 concerts have been held in numerous venues including Copthall School, Mill Hill Boys’ School, North London Collegiate, Halls in Borehamwood, Hatch End, The Arts Depot in Finchley and since 2007 The Hall in The Henrietta Barnett School where we have become happy residents with convenient access to many of our audience.
The club has been very fortunate and privileged to host concerts by many great musicians. In August 1963 the then young Vladimir Ashkenazy gave one of his first U.K. recitals when he came to London. Artur Rubinstein told his agent always to book him for “Hill Mill”. The Amadeus Quartet in their early days in their career gave many concerts. A very young Kiri Te Kanawa stepped in at short notice to replace another singer who was unwell, and Alfred Brendel has performed no less than sixteen times for Mill Hill. Radu Lupu, Jacqueline du Pre, Daniel Barenboim, Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zuckerman Moieseiwitch have also been among the many distinguished names who have performed for the knowledgeable and appreciative audience. The Israel Piano Trio have become firm favourites and have performed for us on very many occasions as well as the renowned Jerusalem Quartet.
Concerts are held at The Hall, The Henrietta Barnett School, Central Square, Hampstead Garden Suburb, London NW11 7BN
The 2024-25 season started on Sunday, 15th September 2024 with the London Mozart Players. Future concerts this season include Piers Lane, Gould Piano Trio and the Barbican String Quartet.
